EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
