The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
