In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
