New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these drugs need to be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
